A derivative instrument or contract is one whose value and other characteristics are derived from those of another asset or instrument (sometimes known as the Underlying Asset).
'Planning and projects' is a core business competency for treasurers identified by the ACT's Competency Framework.


Derivative instruments are widely used by non-financial corporates for hedging purposes.
It is the implementation of departmental, project or team objectives in order to manage scarce resources and deliver results that are in line with corporate objectives. Problem solving is an important related business skill.

A share option is a type of derivative contract, allowing the holder to buy shares at a certain predetermined strike price.
