For example, a licence to carry on a trade or use a particular product such as computer software. A fee or proof of capability may be required.  
In a limited liability company the liability of the members is restricted to a predefined amount.


Authorities may issue a licence, to allow an activity that would otherwise be illegal such as driving or selling alcohol.  
In the case of a company ''limited by shares'' the members' liability is restricted to the amount, if any, unpaid on the shares they hold.  


Almost all commercial companies are of this type.
