Secure Sockets Layer

(SSL).

A predecessor to Transport Layer Security (TLS).

SSL is a communications cryptographic protocol that uses Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) to provide secure communications on the internet for such things as web browsing, e-mail, Internet faxing, instant messaging and other data transfers.
