In education, a summative assessment is one with the primary goal of:
- evaluating student learning at the end of an instructional unit
- by comparing it against an appropriate standard or benchmark.
Examples of summative assessments include:
- examinations
- written dissertations
- presentations
Information from summative assessments can also be used formatively when students or the faculty use it to guide their efforts and activities in subsequent courses.
