The United Nations Environment Programme is sponsored by the UN to be the leading global environmental authority to:

  • Set the global environmental agenda
  • Promote the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system, and
  • Serve as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.


It was established in 1972.

It is headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya.
