A core belief is a client's long-held assumption about themself, other people, or the wider environment.

Core beliefs are often unconscious.


Core beliefs can be positive or negative.

A focus of cognitive behavioural work is raising the client's self-awareness of their core beliefs, and working to challenge and change unhelpful core beliefs.
