Information technology.

Virtualisation allows computing resources to operate more efficiently and cost-effectively by overcoming the physical constraints of:

  • Servers (hardware for storing, securing, accessing, and managing data and services) and
  • Operating systems (that manage hardware and other software)

Virtualisation describes the creation of virtual, rather than actual, versions of the servers and operating systems.

Virtualisation is one of the elements that enables cloud computing.
