1. Alternative dispute resolution procedures.
Mediation is a procedure to resolve disputes without taking them to court.
An independent and skilled mediator aims to assist the parties to reach a mutually acceptable resolution of the points of conflict between them.
In the UK, mediators have no powers to oblige the parties to accept a settlement.
2. International law.
A process for the peaceful settlement of disputes between states.
An independent third party - with the agreement of the states in dispute - engages actively in the negotiatons between them, designed to reach a mutually agreeable settlement and minimise any resentment between the states.
