1. Documentation.

A certificate is a formal document providing legal evidence of a fact or claim.

For example, a certificate of deposit, a certificate of insurance, or a certificate issued on the award of a professional qualification.

2. Education.

A Certificate is a level of educational qualification.

For example, in the Association of Corporate Treasurers' professional qualifications, a Certificate is higher-level than an Award, but lower-level than a Diploma.
