A good chart of accounts is a well structured detailed list that:
- Sets out all of the detailed separate accounts within the organisation's accounting system, for example Direct income, Indirect income, Commission expense on sales and many others.
- Is classified and grouped in helpful ways to support as many of the different uses of the accounting records as practicable, with the minimum of manual intervention and time, and the greatest clarity, accuracy and ability to "drill down" from summary into details.
