Although membership of the G-77 subsequently increased substantially, the original name was retained because of its historical significance.
 
 
The G-77's aims include providing the means for the countries of the South to articulate and promote their collective economic interests and enhance their joint negotiating capacity on major international economic issues within the United Nations system, and promoting South-South cooperation for development.
 
 
Also known as the Group of 77 or G77.
