The UK government Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy is responsible for:

  • business
  • industrial strategy
  • science, research and innovation
  • energy and clean growth and
  • climate change


Its priorities from 2019 to 2020 are to:

  • deliver an ambitious industrial strategy
  • maximise investment opportunities and bolster UK interests as the UK leaves the EU
  • promote competitive markets and responsible business practices
  • ensure the UK has a reliable, low cost and clean energy system and
  • build a flexible, innovative, collaborative and business-facing department


The BEIS was formed in 2016 by the merger of the formerly separate:

(i) Department for Business, Innovation & Skills (BIS) and
(ii) Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC).
