Education.

In education, a summative assessment is one with the primary goal of:

  • evaluating student learning at the end of an instructional unit
  • by comparing it against an appropriate standard or benchmark.

Examples of summative assessments include:

  • examinations
  • written dissertations
  • presentations

Information from summative assessments can also be used formatively when students or the faculty use it to guide their efforts and activities in subsequent courses.
