To promote something is to encourage or facilitate it, often through practical or financial support.

For example, the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) is established to promote international trade.


2. Marketing.

Making customers aware of a product or service, for example through advertising.


3. Organisations - governance - human resources.

Appointing an individual to a more senior, more responsible or better paid position with their current employer.
