In arbitration, the parties to a dispute agree to the appointment of an independent arbitrator or arbitrators, by whose decision they agree to be bound.


Many arbitrators are legally qualified and experienced, especially in more complex cases.

However, depending on the jurisdiction, this is not necessarily a strict requirement, if the arbitrator is suitably experienced in dispute resolution.
