The OECD defines land degradation as including reduction or loss of biological or economic productivity - or complexity - of relevant land.


Land degradation can result from pollution, patterns of agriculture and other land use, natural processes, destruction of vegetation, or the interaction of these activities and processes.

An extreme form of land degradation is desertification.
