Competition - regulation and law - World Trade Organization (WTO).
The WTO defines state subsidies to include any benefit conferred by a direct or indirect financial contribution by a governmental body.
Subsidies that distort international trade are 'disciplined' in various ways by the WTO.
However, the WTO's rules on subsidies are significantly less stringent than, for example, European Union state aid law.
