Thermal coal is coal of a grade that is burned to create heat.
Some applications of that heat include generating electricity in steam turbines.
For this reason, thermal coal is also sometimes known as "steam coal".
Types of thermal coal include black coal and brown coal.
Black coal produces more heat per tonne.
Brown coal contains more moisture and impurities, and produces less heat per tonne.
Other types of coal - that are not thermal coal - include coking coal.
