1. UK financial regulation - Payment Systems Regulator (PSR) - Confirmation of Payee - building societies.
In the context of UK building societies, a roll number is a unique number assigned by the building society to an individual account.
It is an alternative - secondary - type of reference data, contrasted with the sort codes and account numbers used by banks.
2. Referencing.
A reference number used for identification of individuals, for example on enrolment into an educational institution.
